The HEMP-HQ project “RESEARCH OF NEW HIGH QUALITY HEMP FABRICS
FOR DECORATION” developed by RIOMA S.L. has been co-financed by the
European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Center for Industrial Technological Development
(CDTI).
OBJECTIVES:
The overall objective of this project in its MILESTONE-1 has been the Research and Development of a manufacturing and ennobling process of hemp fabrics and their blends (mainly hemp and wool), which has resulted in sustainable upholstery fabrics of high quality and great design power for the upholstery sector. The formation and weaving of the yarn on hemp substrates has been studied, achieving products with good drape and feel properties. Dyeing has also been studied in depth to improve fastness to rubbing, washing and light. Likewise, laser engraving was studied and mechanical and chemical finishes were applied to obtain high quality fabrics for upholstery, specifically cushions.
The processes carried out in this milestone presented a multitude of factors and questions that could condition the final results obtained, the main challenge being the use of new textile materials. The aim was to obtain final fabrics made of hemp and its blends (mainly hemp and wool) for upholstery with great design capacity and that mainly complied with the technical characteristics usually demanded by these fabrics, in order to guarantee their efficiency.
To obtain the final product, RIOMA began with the selection and determination of the materials to be used, from the hemp material with its mixtures and dyes to the auxiliaries for bleaching, to the most suitable functionalizing products for this project. Subsequently, the study and development of the different processes to obtain the resulting product (spinning, delignification and joint bleaching, dyeing, weaving, weaving ennobling and laser engraving) was carried out.
It should be noted that, in all the processes involved in the project, the optimum configuration has been chosen, both at laboratory and industrial level, complying with all the requirements to obtain a sustainable process for the manufacture and finishing of hemp fabrics and their blends.
This is the reason for the presentation of this project by RIOMA successfully developed, achieving a highly sustainable and more attractive product for customers to maintain its prestigious position in the market.
