At Rioma, sustainability is a key pillar in our commitment to textile innovation. Aware of the environmental impact of the industry, we have developed the HEMP-HQ project, an initiative focused on the research and manufacture of high quality hemp fabrics for decoration, with special attention to upholstery and cushion manufacturing. This project has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), allowing us to advance in the creation of more ecological and efficient materials.

A more sustainable and versatile fabric

Hemp is an interesting textile alternative due to its lower water consumption compared to cotton and its highly efficient cultivation. This leafier and hardier plant requires less pesticides and fertilizers, which contributes to a smaller environmental footprint. At HEMP-HQ, we have researched and developed new processes to manufacture fabrics from hemp and its blends, mainly with wool, obtaining textiles with great drape, softness and a high level of design for the upholstery sector.

Innovation at every stage of the process

To obtain the final product, RIOMA began with a careful selection of materials, prioritizing hemp and its blends, as well as the dyes and auxiliaries needed for bleaching and functionalization of the fabrics. In this phase, extensive research and development was carried out to optimize key processes, such as spinning, delignification, co-bleaching, dyeing, weaving, fabric finishing and laser engraving. In addition, mechanical and chemical finishing techniques were studied to improve the fabric’s resistance and durability to factors such as rubbing, washing and exposure to light.

Each of these stages was designed with a focus on sustainability, seeking to maximize efficiency at each stage of production. This was achieved by choosing optimal configurations both in the laboratory and on an industrial scale, ensuring that the resulting fabrics not only met high quality standards, but also respected the ecological principles guiding this project.

One more step towards a responsible future

Thanks to this R&D effort, we have been able to develop hemp fabrics with high aesthetic and functional value, aligned with the needs of the upholstery and decoration sector. This project reaffirms our commitment to responsible innovation and allows us to continue advancing in the creation of textiles that combine design, quality and sustainability. At Rioma, we continue to work to offer more ecological alternatives without compromising performance or creativity. HEMP-HQ is just the beginning of the road to a more sustainable textile future.
